Fatal shooting at Brookland Park & Barton

Here’s the update on yesterday’s fatal shooting at Brookland Park and Barton. Police say the murder was not random, but they are “concerned about possible retaliation.” The release in full follows.

Richmond Police investigators are investigating a homicide that occurred this afternoon in a north side neighborhood.

At 2:22 p.m., officers were called to the 3000 block of Barton Avenue for a report of a man shot. They arrived within seconds and discovered the body of Antoine Leon Saunders, 27, 6000 block of Derwent Road, lying in the sidewalk along Barton Avenue a few yards from the intersection with Brookland Park Boulevard.

He had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The gunman, a black male wearing a grey sweatshirt and blue jeans, was last seen running north on Barton Ave.

Detectives do not believe this was a random act but the Department is concerned about possible retaliation. Extra officers will be patrolling the area in an effort to prevent any further violence.

Detectives are asking anyone with any information about this crime to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both methods are anonymous.

CB6 is reporting that a person was shot and killed near the intersection of Brookland Park & Barton. If true that would be the Northside’s 4th homicide and the city’s 14th in 2012.

I’ll update this post as I get more details.
