The Richmond Vegetarian Festival

By John Sarvay

The annual Richmond Vegetarian Festival was a blast — and a success. While the springlike weather we experienced earlier in the week vanished under a wave of heat and humidity, the Azalea Gardens at Bryan Park were packed with vendors and happy crowds during the early afternoon. There was an abundance of pet adoption and other pet-centric booths, but there was full representation from a wide swath of local health, nutrition and food-related organizations.

We grabbed lunch and found a shady, breezy corner of the garden to eat with our three-year-old, and then I listened to the punk sounds of the Canary Promise while she got an orange butterfly painted on her face. Our sweaty escape was foiled by the placement of Jonathan the Juggler, the Waldorf School’s corn box and two inflatable jumping stations — turning our one hour visit into a two hour-plus stay.

This is veggietably good conclusion of one of our assignments.
