29 trees accidentally cut down in Battery Park
Style reports on a tree-travesty in Battery Park:
The trees were “accidentally” cut down by a city work crew clearing brush last month, confirms Department of Public Works spokeswoman Sharon North. She declines to say whether the employees responsible have been disciplined.
But worry not fellow arborists: “officials say the 29 trees felled during a brush removal will be replaced.”

What…someone “accidentally” put orange signs on them, someone accidentally thought the work order said…clear the land not the brush…supervisors?
It’s a travesty!
Does anyone know if these were large mature trees?
Liked this comment on the Style piece:
“Make them give a date a solid date when the trees will be replaced. If the city “accidentally” cut down 30 trees in Windsor Farms, you can bet the citizens there would have pushed for trees AND improved playgrounds for the children.”
#2, The Style article (which I originally forgot to link to) says:
man this happens to me ALL the time…
Most were dogwoods and redbuds. Those don’t get much bigger then 5 to 6 inches around.
It is odd that City will be planting trees in the fall but they are currently planting trees now.
