Confusing calming measures
Last week we ran some pictures of the partially completed traffic calming measures on Westbrook Avenue. One commenter presciently asked:
I think they’ve turned a “cut-through road” problem into a “run over a median you didn’t see problem.”
While they’ve landscaped the medians nicely, it didn’t take long for someone to run over one and massacre a row of shrubbery.
The problem is not that the medians themselves are confusing, it’s the yellow line. The medians, as you can see, are a couple feet into the lane from the yellow line. Until the line is repainted it will continue to confuse drivers.
After the jump is a picture of the landscaped traffic circle.

Those are funny-looking speed-bumps.
Yeah, it def. looks like the lines need to be repainted through the entire intersection.
If you can’t decide whether to follow the yellow line or to avoid the concrete islands then maybe you should walk. Surely they plan to repave and delineate the lanes as soon as it stops raining……The lanes need to be widened so that the people who park on Westbrook can get their cars/vans/suv out of the road. That is the hazard.
I don’t understand how anyone could not be in favor of this improvement.
@dbt I think it definitely will be an improvement. However, at night, after they removed the bright orange signage, the medians are pretty tough to see. Their temporary solution, until they repave/repaint, leaves much to be desired.
It is a bit dark. They could put street lights on the existing utility poles but I’m not sure those living on Westbrook would be in favor of that. I have a street light in front of my house and I actually enjoy having the area lit….And while we’re spending a little extra coin we should put curbs and sidewalks(N side of Westbrook)….
Again, I’m in favor of said improvements as I live in/walk around these blocks and it used to be pretty “busted” looking. The cars parked on Westbrook should be ticketed….
