Walk-through of Barton Heights with Chief Norwood TONIGHT
Just got this email about a neighborhood walk-through with Police Chief Norwood TONIGHT.
bq. Richmond Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood and his Command Staff will visit the residents and business owners of North Barton Heights this evening in the Chief’s continuing series of community walk-throughs.
bq. Chief Norwood and his staff will join Fourth Precinct officers for a walk covering Edgewood, Griffin, Fendall and Hanes avenues. Each of these streets intersects with a primary gateway for Northside — Brookland Park Boulevard, which also is slated for revitalization as a commercial corridor in Mayor Dwight C. Jones’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2011.
bq. North Barton Heights was one of the first stops for Chief Norwood and his Command Staff when he began the walk-throughs in January 2009. They are returning for an annual checkup to see if progress is continuing on input and suggestions from citizens and business owners made last year.
bq. The community walk-through begins **6 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, 2811 Fendall Ave**. Members of the media are encouraged to attend.
Heya! Can anyone shed some light on where neighborhoods start and end?
–Edgewood, Griffin, Fendall and Hanes —
Where does Highland Park, Barton Heights and Ginter Park start/ end in relationship with these streets to Brooklyn Park? I’ve been told different things by cab drivers, local long-time residents and the police.
Well, that depends… the original lines are not really relevant anymore; these streets (above) were Northern Barton Hts. Also, some downtown-to-Northside neighborhoods, such as parts of Jackson Ward and Navy Hill are waylaid. I am told that Gilpin was actually once part of Jackson Ward. Now, however, we tend to run along Civic Association lines. Below are the associations east of Chamberlayne:
Brookland Park Blvd: Brookland Park Merchants Association. Ask any store clerk along the corridor for info.
North of Brookland Park Blvd:
Ginter Park Terrace Assoc: Chamberlayne to half of Edgewood (it may be Montrose, but I’ll let someone from GPTA post here)
North Central Civic Assoc: Edgewood to Barton
Northern Barton Heights: Barton to Richmond/Henrico Tnpke.
Highland Park: East of Richmond/Henrico Tnpke. Don’t know if any part of HP has a Civic Association. Then, there is east Highland Park, and the Southern Tip (below the six points).
South of Brookland Park Blvd:
Battery Park: Chamberlayne to North Ave. Wickham is the southern border.
Southern Barton Heights: North Ave. to Richmond Henrico Tnpke. Includes street south of Wickham on the western side of North Ave. Southern edge ends before the railroad tracks into Gilpin Court (St. James Street and Monteiro).
ha! that shows how much I know (which is nothing). I always thought Gilpin Court was and is in Jackson Ward.

So Chief Norwood is walking between Barton Heights (old school) –but the area is now named North Central (Civic Assoication name) — and a part of Battery Park (old school and current Civic)? But basically his walk is, East, down Brookland Park Blvd which is par of the Brooklyn Park Merchants Association? Whew, glad they gave street names.
Actually the part they walked was orginally was the Town of Brookland Park, or Brookland Park, they walked in the area that is now called Battery Park.

If anyone from North Central, Ginter Park Terrace, or Northern Barton Heights is available, R&S Grocery Store is having their court case TODAY. We need community support, especially if requested to be a witness for the drug/prostitution issues surrounding this store.
