Wanna work for City Council?
The City of Richmond is looking for citizens to sit on various boards, commissions, committees, and task forces. There are 37 spots that need filling, and time commitments vary by appointment (vastly: a couple hours a year to 20 hours a month). You can apply online, but I’m not sure where yet — I’ll let you know when I receive the correct link.
Some of the boards/etc that have vacancies are:
* Affordable Housing Trust Fund Board
* Building Code Appeals Board – Electrical Division
* Green City Commission
* Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Advisory Board
Plus many more (full list after the jump).

Just a note: the application process is a little shady! (http://www.ci.richmond.va.us/CityCouncil/CouncilBoardsCommissions.aspx)
Appointment Process
The Richmond City Council appointment process for local or regional public government bodies or non-government organizations includes the following:
1. Application completed and submitted
2. Richmond City Council Standing Committing providing oversight over that entity/appointment reviews application and makes recommendation
3. Application recommendation is forwarded to Richmond City Council Organizational Standing Committing
4. Richmond City Council Organizational Standing Committing makes recommendation to appoint or not appoint
5. Richmond City Council Organizational Standing Committing has Richmond City Council Resolution for Appointment prepared for chosen appointment
6. Applicant is invited to attend Richmond City Council Formal Meeting where Council Resolution will be considered for official approval
7. Richmond City Council holds Formal Meeting, which includes a public hearing, and votes on Resolution of Appointment (applicant must be in attendance)
8. Applicants approved by Resolution of Appointment are sworn in
9. Member’s service begins
All those boards and commissions and all those vacant seats. Maybe if council and the mayor would take the time to bother to fill them then they…wait, they don’t listen to any of the boards or commissions anyway sooooo, nevermind.
updated link isn’t working
All those boards and commissions are a joke. Some don’t meet, and most have no real role in policy or program development. Let’s not get caught up in the political jargon of “volunteering” or working for Council. The Council won’t even eliminate the Boards that don’t function, because their political allies sit on those boards and are padding their resumes.
Let me make sure I have this straight — City Council wants private citizens to fill out these applications so that City Council will then have *legitimate* cause to pry into every aspect of the applicant’s life?
Perhaps the members of City Council, the School Board, Mayor Jones and Supt. Brandon should fill out the forms FIRST and post them online for all to see.
Better yet, I would love to see the members of Council, School Board, Mayor and Supt. take the SOLs and have those numbers posted online.
Now, that would really be something worth seeing.
