Sector 411 & 412 updates
The RPD have released their monthly sector reports. You can download Sector 411‘s (PDF) and Sector 412‘s (PDF) if you want the full details.
411
- Crime down 4% as compared to July 2008
- An increase in robberies around Gilpen Court and the 1200 – 1400 blocks of Brookland Park Blvd.
- There were 37 drug arrests in July
412
- Crime down 6% compared to July 2008
- Eight robberies in July
- In June the sector saw a 42% increase in motor vehicle theft (resulting in some robocalls). This month is down 45% from June’s numbers — but still up 18% from last year.
- Six commercial burglaries
- There were 15 drug arrests in July
Here is a handy Sector map if you’re feeling lost.

Are arrests the sole factor in determining the decrease/increase in crime? Calls for service? Neighborhood complaints? I feel like things are ramping up and sometimes worse re: drugs, guns, parties.
It’s called “juking the stats.”
No, arrests are not the determining factor. The number of crimes that happen also determine the increase/decrease in crime.
“The number of crimes that happen also determine the increase/decrease in crime.” Yes, but how are those crimes determined? My question was getting at Lauren S. (#2)’s response. Are fewer crimes being reported? Are crimes being ignored? I know residents in my community have continually reported ongoing crimes that are repeatedly ignored.
A follow-up question: who benefits from these decreased crime numbers? Do the communities benefit? Or the RPD? Or the Chief? What’s the real motivating factor here?
I’m not sure where else to post this, so while we’re on the topic of sector 411, how do you guys feel about the safety of the 00 block of W Lancaster Rd (between Miller and North)? I’ve got some friends moving in over there.
Below is the information from the RPD crime stats. I pulled information for the same period I think the numbers are being “played” with.

Robert. Surprising with it being so close to North I thought it would be bad. But alot of houses have been redone, good redo’s, and the nieghbors on that block don’t let anything happen.
Richard, sadly some things, just can not be copied and pasted. I am having a hard time figuring out what the numbers mean that you posted, a link would be better. I “think”
The data looks to be from the RPD’s Crime Incident Information, which has not proven to be a completely reliable source.
Sorry about that. I tried to link it but it wouldn’t work.
John, I don’t well there is a big difference in the numbers the RPD was reporting last year compared with now.
RPD does seems incidents from their stats from time to time. Back in July there was a drug bust on my street and it never made it to incidents data. When other drug bust have.
