[...] progress. Maybe one of the cities should be Richmond, CA. I know I am looking forward to comparing Mayor Jones’ newsletter with Mayor [...]
I would like to request to be placed on the list for the electronic newsletter.
Thank you.
There is an interesting difference here. Mayor Jones is asking you to sign up. Mayor Wilder had his IT people strip the emails of anyone in the city data bank who had requested service, and made that his email list. I think the Jones way is significantly more ethical.
I received an unsolicited email from Jones asking me to sign up for his newsletter. I assume he got my email address from the city data bank – there would be no other way he would have it. I do not see how that is any more or less ethical than what Wilder did.
I got that email, too, and thought that it was ok. The message was that you’d need to take an action to continue to receive the email. Given how the previous list was built, this was the only way to continue the list without having to start from scratch.
Again, I don’t understand why Wilder’s would be considered “unethical” but Jone’s “ethical.” If the way Wilder acquired his was “unethical” than Jone’s use of it would be equally “unethical.” Frankly, I get tired of the endless swipes at Wilder.
It’s legal to send out a single notification email with an opt-IN option.
Canned Spam act does no allow the Opt Out emails, not that that stops the spammers.
“Unethical” because Wilder took the address you subm, itted in your communications with the city, and used it for a non-governmental, political purpose.
What is amazing is that Mayor Jones’s letter conveys helpful information. I was not accostomed to that under the previous administration.
Wilder used the addresses for his Mayor’s Newsletter, just as Jones is. You may not have liked the content of his newsletter, but that is what it was. Jones took the same addresses, gathered in the same manner, and is using them for his Mayor’s Newsletter. Just because you like the content of Jones info doesn’t make it any more ethical.
As was pointed out earlier, Mayor Jones requested that I opt in to receive the newsletter which I did. Mayor Wilder simply began sending me his newsletter without asking if I wanted to receive his newletter or not. Given the rather tumultuous time when Wilder was at the helm, I find Mayor Jones’s approach and refreshing.
Enough about Wilder. He’s gone.
Doug who?
