If the ghetto thugs overrun this development it will have no chance of long term survival. I’d like to see some opinions on how to keep that element out. As a Carver resident I’m happy to see this area finally taking shape. The good citizens in Northside, The Fan, and surrounding neighborhoods need to do all they can to support the businesses that come into the boulevard area. If we don’t, then this effort will wind up limping along full of pawn shops, Urban fashions, and “fish markets” like the Broad Street corridor from Belvidere to 6th St.
I hope the denizens of Broad St. & the Blvd. as well as the folks who hang out at the bus station don’t frighten people away. Northsiders have often lamented the lack of a movie theater closer to home.
By “thugs”, do you mean the homeless and transients that hang out near the bus station? Because, if so, I don’t think they will have enough money to purchase movie tickets or patronize the high-end shops. I suppose they might panhandle on the sidewalk in front of the place. Is that your concern?
Gee, edg, you sound like you have an edg-on about keeping black people, or young black people out.
NOBODY has said a word about that. Are you trying to bait people into an argument? If so, you might consider arguing with your ownself considering that people who live on Northside immediately know the problem has to do with drug dealers and gangbangers. This issue is not racial — it is criminal.
Gimme a break. All businesses want to keep the drug dealers out and they do. Which ones do you know that cater to drug dealers (and I am talking about large businesses like the development we are discussing.
Not a large, corporately owned movie house. The Broad Street corridor serves a large number of black customers, not necessarily drug dealers. Red Cloud’s statement makes it sound like he doesn’t want the same customers that patronize Broad Street in there. Maybe he didn’t intend it to be racially charged, but gang bangers and drug dealers are a very small percentage of the patrons in that area, but it does have a large black clientele.
Whoooaaaahhhh…….hold on there, Sapphire/edg, hohohold-on there!
“Maybe he didn’t intend it to be racially charged, but gang bangers and drug dealers are a very small percentage of the patrons in that area, but it does have a large black clientele.”
Illegal drugs are an equal-opportunity death-dealing enterprise in procurement, suppply and use.
It’s no big mystery who causes the problems around here. I’m no “come here” college student or suburbanite transplant either. I’ve lived here for twelve years which qualifies me to speak on the subject.
I’m friends with all types of folks who live in my neighborhood (Carver) and any one of them would agree with me on this fact; The drug dealers, gangbangers, derelict thugs, and low life trash with no personal interest in the neighborhood other than hanging out selling drugs, stealing, and basically causing trouble are the problem in most of the inner Richmond City neighborhoods.
Well, what are the cops waiting for? A hand-engraved invitation? Why aren’t the schools doing a better job of preparing our children to grow up and get legitimate jobs?
Not sure about the police that seems to be a hit and miss. Myself and others in the nieghborhood have been reporting a drug house for 6 months but nothing has happen. And yes I sent the email trail to the New Chief of Police and still nothing. As for the schools I couldn’t even take a that one on. There are so many things wrong with RPD to fix.
In any event, I’d like to say that I’m thrilled to have a classy, somewhat diverse (independent and mainstream) cinema coming to our backyard. I plan on doing my part to support the theater! Hope to see you all there!
It is very clear to me that RC doesn’t like the young black hip-hop “looking” crowd. Wanting to keep out the “ghetto” thugs is racial. No one is stupid here! Ghetto is not an adjective but used as one as code for black people or hip-hop culture. It really is becoming the new N word. I see young black people going to movies in short pump and chesterfield and some of them just might be drug dealers but they go to the movie to see the movie they pay their money. I’ve never heard of any body trying to set up operation or turf for drug dealing at a movie theater. So why did you say that ignorant stuff in the first place.Wanting to “keep some people out” how Jim Crow of you.
Interesting, my post from yesterday is not here. Maybe a moderator deleted it? So I guess you can only express opinions that the moderator agrees with but it is okay to use “ghetto” as an adjective, which is highly offensive to many.
Speaking as a black person who (gee golly!) is NOT a drug dealer/thug/any other coded racist term… this is EXACTLY why I’m moving from this stupid city to a much more progressive one: uppity, narrow-minded, FFV-like folks from the old school, always ranting away their ignorant opinions about black folks.
Try being one of us for a day! Try entering an establishment where all white heads over 50 turn to YOU when you set foot in the door! Try being told to straighten your naturally textured hair in order to get/keep a job because, you know, it’s “too black”! Try being ASSUMED WITHIN A MONOLITHIC GROUP AS A “GANG BANGER” OR “THUG”!
Memo to Redcloud: ALL MONEY IS GREEN! Oh – and your white sheet and hood are ready for pick-up at the cleaners!
“this is EXACTLY why I’m moving from this stupid city to a much more progressive one”
As they say “just_a_citizen” Peace Out!
I’m certainly no racist. A couple of my closest friends are black and I’m not talking about one black person I know who I claim as a friend when it’s convenient so no need to throw that shot. I’m talking about folks who were in my wedding, have been to my grandparent’s house for Christmas, and etc…close personal friends.
I have no reason to repost what I said before. I’m very open minded and have lived here long enough to see who causes the problems. It’s not a stereotype or generalization. Young black males are the primary offenders in the City of Richmond…it’s a fact Jack! Is it because there’s a higher percentage of blacks to whites…possibly? Either way it’s a fact…not racist.
There’s no question that the majority of the people living in the city neighborhoods (black, white, whatever) are good honest people just doing their thing. I’ve lived here long enough to know that firsthand. All of us are including you “citizen” (unless you’re one of “them”) who live in the city have to deal with the daily ignorance of the minority who don’t care about their neighbor’s well being, trash their neighborhoods, steal&rob the local businesses, and so on…
My point all along has been that the good citizens need to support Movieland and the surrounding businesses that move in as much as we can so that area doesn’t fall to the minority as much of the city has.
“Young black males are the primary offenders in the City of Richmond…”
“…so that [Movieland] doesn’t fall to the minority as much of the city has.”

Wow.
Redcloud, do you even realize what you’re saying?! You ARE a racist, but simply can’t admit it to yourself. Having “a couple friends who are black” does not make you immune to being a racist, especially since you just admitted your BELIEF that young, black men are the “primary offenders” of this town. Oh, so I guess that ALL of us “darkies” don’t deserve to enjoy a film or two on the big screen because, you know, we’re the “element” that needs to be kept away from upscale establishments, apparently reserved for such classy (ha!) white folks like you.
As for your “living here long enough,” I am a NATIVE of Richmond, born and raised here, but according to you, I’m not worthy of attending Movieland because, although I live in Northside, my skin isn’t the “right” color, since I’m part of this supposed monolithic, “ghetto” group. Besides, one’s duration of residence here is irrelevant, anyway.
Redcloud, I honestly feel sorry for you. Instead of taking the world at face value and opening up yourself to new cultures/experiences/people, you stereotype and generalize before you even get aquainted. You and I could have gee, I don’t know, birdwatching in common, but you would never know.
Should any of you feel that the “criminal element” is such a problem in Richmond, why not volunteer with a local organization that assists marginalized groups (regardless of ethnicity) in the community? That way, you could actually DO SOMETHING TO HELP rather than sit back in your 10-bedroom estate on River Road and cry coded racial slurs on a blog post.
I’ll be closing comments on this post now, since the thread has meandered so far from the content of the original post. I’ve been impressed with the ability of folks to actually have this written exchange about race with such a reasonable tone and honesty. There should be more info on Movieland posted over the weekend — I have an interview scheduled with the owners on Friday.
That’s awesome.
movieland!
i cant wait to spend all my rent money on over priced crappy cinema!
but atleast i wont have to drive there!
<3<3<3
I can’t wait for this to open! Though I am holing out hope for neighborhood discount!

Will it have laser projection and 3D?
Redcloud. Or it end up like Brookland Park Blvd, with 15 different places to your hair done at.
Redcloud & Richard:
Way to class the joint up. You two should move to the West End, you’d fit in very well.
I hope the denizens of Broad St. & the Blvd. as well as the folks who hang out at the bus station don’t frighten people away. Northsiders have often lamented the lack of a movie theater closer to home.

Panhandling is another issue, but I’m referring to the gangbangers and drug dealers who do have money to go to the movies.
So, you want to keep black people out? Or, just young black people?
Ummm no. I want to keep the drug dealers and gangbangers out.
Gee, edg, you sound like you have an edg-on about keeping black people, or young black people out.

JoeRichmond….Sounds like edg was baiting.
….Mayhaps, you’re right, Richard. Or, edg could just be ignorant of the facts.

Well, maybe we need to organize those “Take Back Our Streets” nights to happen more than once a year? Say, once a month, or every two months?
Wouldn’t that be something?!
In any event, I’d like to say that I’m thrilled to have a classy, somewhat diverse (independent and mainstream) cinema coming to our backyard. I plan on doing my part to support the theater! Hope to see you all there!
hello where do apply for a job with movieland

Actually, the moderator hasn’t been able to check the comments queue for several days. Lighten up.

RIGHT ON @ Jon & Freedom…
Oh, and credit to edg for calling out the REALITY of the rampant racism in this thread!
Now. Back to your regularly scheduled blogpost :)
