Summer learning opportunities from Richmond Public Schools

As part of Richmond Public Schools commitment to increasing rigor and opportunities for extended learning, below are a few programs the district will be offering this summer.

Creating ‘Virtual Worlds’

The district’s middle school students will have an opportunity to use an interactive computer-based program to collaborate with team members and mentors from Virginia Commonwealth and Cornell universities. Students will participate in visual and problem –solving exercises to build their own 3D multi-user computer graphics exhibit. Classes will be held at Albert Hill and Brown middle schools from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Call 780-7895 or 780-7100 for details.

MSI: Richmond

One hundred middle school students will take part in the summer component o the Mathematics Science Investigators program with the University of Richmond (UR). Participants will enjoy hands-on science, advanced programs, field trips and more. The program is designed to prepare middle school students for advanced placement and/or college level courses. Classes meet from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the UR campus. For more information, call 780-7895 or contact Dr. James Wright at 289-8245.

Meeting the ‘Technical Challenge’

Richmond City eighth-graders will take part in Technical Challenge, a summer enrichment program held at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. The program features a hands-on curriculum that focuses on careers in mathematics, science and technology. For details, contact Alethia Elam or Nelson Colbert at 780-7750.

JROTC Leadership Challenge

The Richmond City high school JROTC cadets will take on the physical and mental challenges found at Ft. Eustis as participants in the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge. Along with team building and leadership exercises, the cadets will also meet the challenge of the Ft. Eustis rappelling tower and obstacle course. The leadership challenge will take place July 18-24.
