Planning commission to revisit roundabout on July 7
During Monday’s meeting of the Richmond Planning Commission, members heard details on the proposed roundabout at the intersection of Laburnum and Hermitage avenues; the roundabout would replace the current system of traffic signals at the intersection. According to Brooke Hardin with the city’s Department of Community Development, the commission chose to continue the roundabout item until their next meeting on Monday, July 7:
The Planning Commission voted to continue the AP Hill Roundabout item until 7/7/08. The commission requested that the Traffic Engineering Division do the following prior to bringing the project back for consideration: 1) provide additional information on the safety of two-lane roundabouts and 2) solicit feedback on the project from representatives of the School Board, Police Department, Holton Elementary, and Holton PTA.

Dear Friends,
I appeared at the public hearing on this matter and raised safety concerns based on conversation with parents and with Holton principal, David Hudson. I questioned the safety of children crossing a busy street with NO traffic lights, I questioned why no one had contacted the people in our transportation and operations departments concerning what this means for students arriving by bus.
I believe that had the traffic group pushed for the vote at the meeting, it would have gone down in flames, largely because of the concerns I presented. Meg Lawrence (Ginter Park) and Roy Reynolds (Bellevue) were there as was Irene Jennings.
I think the traffic people have good intentions. I am just not convinced that this is the solution for the problem we have w/ that intersection.
Respectfully,
