Send a kid to camp

As summer arrives, kids throughout the city are preparing for vacation — and summer camp. But many families in Richmond can’t afford to send their kids to camp, even the relatively low-cost camps operated by Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities.

You can help by sending a kid to camp this summer.

Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, in partnership with Radio One and Miss Community Clovia, is inviting citizens to help Richmond’s children by sending a child to camp this summer.

“Even though the fees for our summer camps are nominal, there are still many families in the City of Richmond that can’t afford them, especially if they have more than one child,” said Roz Johnson, the department’s deputy director. “This is an opportunity for citizens to have a real impact on our children’s lives by making sure they have something positive to do this summer.”

The department’s summer day camp program begins on June 23 and runs Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Aug. 22 at 21 locations throughout the city. These camps offer children between the ages of six-years-old and 12-years-old a fun and enriching summer experience for nine weeks that will stimulate their curiosity, develop their talents and encourage their personal growth. In addition to supervised activities and field trips, the camps also include a free breakfast and lunch for each child each day.

Just $180 will send one child to camp; however citizens may contribute any amount they wish, and all donations are tax deductible.

Donations can be made online by visiting www.rrpfoundation.org and clicking on Send a Kid to Camp, or checks made payable to RRPF/Send a Kid to Camp can be mailed to the Richmond Recreation and Parks Foundation, Richmond Landmark Theater, Rm. 304, 6 North Laurel St., Richmond, VA 23220.
