Lewis Ginter’s expanded rose garden opens

With 1,800 roses representing more than 80 varieties, the expanded Rose Garden at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden gives visitors plenty to stop and smell. The garden recently reopened after eight months of construction, replanting and renovation:
The Rose Garden is designed to bring its visitors in intimate contact with plants and blooms – encouraging that almost instinctive bending forward to smell a rose flower for its perfume! One unique aspect of the design is the color scheme – the central area will be planted in whites and creams, with pinks, purples and reds graduating in intensity to the southwest side, and yellows, apricots and oranges graduating in intensity to the northwest.
The paved area of the Belvedere has been enlarged to accommodate a wider range of performing arts programs, to be enjoyed by our visitors sitting on the terraced lawn between the Belvedere and the Conservatory.

Send a kid to camp
As summer arrives, kids throughout the city are preparing for vacation — and summer camp. But many families in Richmond can’t afford to send their kids to camp, even the relatively low-cost camps operated by Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities.
You can help by sending a kid to camp this summer.
Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, in partnership with Radio One and Miss Community Clovia, is inviting citizens to help Richmond’s children by sending a child to camp this summer.
“Even though the fees for our summer camps are nominal, there are still many families in the City of Richmond that can’t afford them, especially if they have more than one child,” said Roz Johnson, the department’s deputy director. “This is an opportunity for citizens to have a real impact on our children’s lives by making sure they have something positive to do this summer.”
The department’s summer day camp program begins on June 23 and runs Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Aug. 22 at 21 locations throughout the city. These camps offer children between the ages of six-years-old and 12-years-old a fun and enriching summer experience for nine weeks that will stimulate their curiosity, develop their talents and encourage their personal growth. In addition to supervised activities and field trips, the camps also include a free breakfast and lunch for each child each day.
Just $180 will send one child to camp; however citizens may contribute any amount they wish, and all donations are tax deductible.
Donations can be made online by visiting www.rrpfoundation.org and clicking on Send a Kid to Camp, or checks made payable to RRPF/Send a Kid to Camp can be mailed to the Richmond Recreation and Parks Foundation, Richmond Landmark Theater, Rm. 304, 6 North Laurel St., Richmond, VA 23220.

North Richmond crafter touts North Richmond florist
Modern June, a North Richmond resident and member of the Richmond Craft Mafia, recently touted Bellevue’s Nicola Flora which recently started selling Modern June hand-crafted aprons and baby items. Here’s a bit of the rave:
Last month I was thrilled to see this sign out side Nicola Floral. This is one of the shops that carries my aprons and baby items. It is only 3 blocks from our house, we saw it one day when my family was out for a walk…
…I love this bit of Bellevue it reminds me of the neighborhood that my Grr would often drive by on our way to the Country Club Plaza, it was full of gingerbread houses (1920’s tudor style homes). I remember thinking how cool that you could have a place to shop right in the middle of the neighborhood. I also used to say I would grow up and live there. Well I live along way away from Kansas City but I do live in neighborhood just like that one! LOVE IT!

Dead animals cropping up in North Richmond
WRIC-TV8 News reports that an unusual number of dead squirrels, chipmunks and birds are showing up in grassy areas — yards and medians — throughout North Richmond.
Resident Cathy Cooper says she’s found five dead animals on her property alone. But the strange thing is, none of them had trauma to their bodies and all appeared to be healthy.
Cooper tells us, “I’m a physician, so I thought these animals aren’t traumatized. They look perfectly fine. It really looked like maybe they were poisoned.”
Cooper decided to get online with neighborhood news groups to see if anyone else noticed a problem and that’s when a pattern emerged. She tells us residents reported a total of six dead squirrels, five chipmunks, and 10 to 15 birds in the last two weeks.
We are told all of the animals were found in Laburnum Park, Ginter Park and Bellevue along roads with large grassy medians…
…The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries issued a request to residents to bag and ice any freshly dead animals so that they can determine what’s killing them.

Satire site ribs Kitchen 64
Tobacco Avenue, a Richmond-based satire website, took a gentle jab at one of North Richmond’s newer eating destinations, Kitchen 64:
…two Richmond-area stoners pondered how funny it would be if popular restaurant Kitchen 64 were called Kitchen 64 Plus 5.
“Dude, like, ’cause just think about what 64 plus five equals,” giggled pothead Zach Frye to fellow half-baked stoner buddy Jerome Walker, who just squinted his eyes and laughed. “Or like, if one of their creatively-named sandwiches was called The Mary Jane, and it had all this crazy-good meat on it.”
