Roy’s to flip final burgers

North Richmond’s favorite burger stand — Roy’s Big Burgers on Lakeside Avenue — is turning off the grill, according to a Live Journal RVA Eats post:

Bad news! I was at Roy’s Big Burger today and there is a sign up that they will be closing for good on April 9th. It doesn’t appear they are going out of business…the lady is just tired of making burgers after 38 years. I can’t fault her for that, but I’m still disappointed. Great burgers, and one of the few places that still has one of those ice machines that makes that small crumbled ice.

So, go by there while you still can!

Anyone know of alternatives? I can’t take much more…first Zippy’s on the Boulevard closed, and now this. The only other similar kind of place I know of is Sam’s Burgers on Route 1, but I don’t like their burgers as much.

I talked with one of the owners and they are NOT closing. see http://the804.com/blog/?p=239

A co-worker just got off the phone with Roy’s and found out they’re not closing! They had a break-in recently and a lot of stuff was vandalized and stolen, so they need to clean up, but they’ll be open as normal next week!

why were they featured on NBC12 evening local news as closing if they aren’t? they interviewed the owner/operator and she confirmed she was shutting it down on 4/9. confusion.

  4. posted by Sandy at March 20, 2008 10:53 pm :

The lady in the interview was not the owner. The Nunnally family has owned Roy’s for over 25 years. As soon as they get the green light from the health department they will reopen. Roy’s will not be closing as reported by 12 news.

Sharon Anderson, Roy’s Big Burger’s owner/operator/employee, told me of the closing on 3/10. She said she’s tired, she has health concerns, and other issues regarding the buisiness. I went by there today, 3/21, not having heard of any of the incidents that have occurred since my visit there on 3/10. There is a sign in the window stating that the “rumors” of Roy’s closing are not true, and that they plan to stay in buisiness another 25 years. I found out that the building/property owner/landlord will be running it. I wonder what’s going on here. Sharon own’s Roy’s Big Burger, and the name. She has worked there for 38 years and there have only been two people there that could cook the meat to make it taste the way people have grown so used to; Roy Horne’s first cook, Bobby(Sharon knew and worked with him), and Sharon Anderson. It ain’t gonna be the same. By the way, that sign made it sound as if Roy’s Big Burger has been in buisiness for all of 25 years. Roy Horne opened it in 1963. What’s going on??

  6. posted by Sandy at March 23, 2008 6:44 pm :

As stated in a previous post, Sharon Anderton is not, was not and has never been the owner of Roy’s Big Burger. She was a manager for some time and a tenant for a few years. The Nunnally family has owned Roy’s Big Burger for over 25 years. Mr. Nunnally purchased it directly from his friend, Roy Horne. The Nunnally’s also own the Roy’s on southside along with 2 What-A-Burgers. Due to recent vandalism Roy’s is closed for a few days. They will reopen as soon as they get the green light from the Health Department. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to call Roy’s at 262-8775. As for the cooking - there will be employees there who have had a lot of experience working at Roy’s Big Burger and you may even see Mr. Nunnally himself behind the grill from time to time. Bobby was a great cook and employed by Mr. Nunnally for many years. He trained Mr.Nunnally so I don’t think anyone needs to worry about quality or taste issues. Mr. Nunnally takes a lot of time and puts a lot of effort into training his cooks!!! We are sorry for all of the confusion, however Sharon Anderton never had the aurhtority to make statements about Roy’s closing. It is not closing now or ever. Again, any questions, please call Roy’s Big Burger on Lakeside Avenue at 262-8775.

I saw the sign at roys and all it said was that she was retiring and leaving not that roys was closing.Sandy…..Is your last name nunnally?

After the news broadcast, the signs and the hundreds of patrons visiting Roy’s last week, it is evident that they were lead to believe that Roy’s is closing. Our main objective at this point is to set the record straight and deal with the vandalism that occurred last week. Thanks again for the interest, stop by Roy’s to see us soon!!

I happened to be at Roy’s on Saturday after the broadcast on Channel 12. I heard several customers asking Sharon why she wasn’t selling Roy’s and each time she was asked this she simply said, “It’s not mine to sell. I am simply retiring and I don’t know what will be done with the name or the building.” Never once did she say anything negative about the owner of the building so why is the owner giving her such bad press? Are the Nunnally’s afraid they won’t be able to live up to the reputation of Roy Horne? I am glad I went to Roy’s the last Saturday that Sharon and her crew were there…God bless each of them!

I heard the news on the radio this morning that Sharon was stepping down and David Nunnally would be taking over. Even though people will be able to get the burgers still, I was sad to hear this. I actually worked at Roy’s when I was in high school (10th grade through 12th grade — sometime between 1991 and 1994.) I know Sharon personally and am sorry I have not kept in touch as much over the years (even though I did keep in touch during my first post-Roy’s years, when I was in college and so forth.) That was my first job — I had to get a worker’s permit because I started before I was sixteen. I performed every conceivable duty there, except cook burgers, of course (though I was allowed to practice if it were my own burger to consume!) Fun times, not to mention the free food I ate almost every day on break as an employee. Actually, there was another cook for a time that was not mentioned in the earlier post, who was a close friend of Sharon and who was trained by Sharon. I don’t want to get into more details of that right now, though. This news really hit my heart. I realize most people are not interested in this personal story, so I am sorry to bother you with this. I just needed to add my part.

    Convenient hack

It pains me to have lost comments (and many of the images from articles). We’ve upgraded the backup procedures to hopefully limit any future data loss to less than any one day’s worth of comments.

Interesting how only certain posts were lost, seeing how number 10 was much further down the list originally. As LakesideNative61 and john m said, “Convienient hack”.

  17. posted by LakesideNative61 at April 9, 2008 10:32 pm :

I think it was more a “selective hack” actually.

  18. posted by DMB FAN at April 10, 2008 9:14 am :

I know Sharon personally & happen to know for a fact that she put her heart & soul into Roy’s on a daily basis. I am quite positive that no matter how much “training” Mr. Nunally gives his cooks Roy’s will never be even close to same without her. As for you Sandy - thanks for trying to convince us that Roy’s is going to be just the same, but we are not buying it for one minute. Bottom line here - Sharon=Roy’s without her we would all rather have McDonald’s. Good luck Nunally’s - Karma is a powerful thing!

  19. posted by LakesideNative61 at April 10, 2008 9:30 pm :

Regarding the comment in the earlier post by Sandy about Bobby working for Mr. Nunnally ” for many years, ” I don’t remember Bobby working there long after Roy sold it. I don’t know where she was when that happened. Also, if Sharon didn’t own the business why was she paying rent? Just curious.
